Watch my directed drawing video on how to draw a leprechaun for St. Patrick’s Day
Being named Patrick, March 17th – St. Patrick’s Day – was always a special day for me. It was a day where everyone dressed in green and hung out with family and friends, and where everyone had a little luck of the Irish. Pots of gold at the end of the rainbow, four leaf clovers and of course leprechauns were always part of the fun! Today I’d like to show you an easy way to draw a leprechaun holding some four leaf clovers 🍀. My goal is to make this drawing easy enough for kids in pre-k and kindergarten, but also challenging enough for older kids and adults. Please pause the leprechaun video when you need to catch up. All you need today is a pencil, pen or marker and sheet of paper. And of course feel free to color it GREEN afterwards. I would say good luck, but you already have it on St. Patrick’s Day! – Patrick O.
Follow these directed drawing instructions that make a St. Patrick’s Day leprechaun drawing easy to do:
- First, let’s draw the leprechaun’s hat. Draw a straight line near the top middle of the page. Then draw two lines up and slanting in from each end of the first line. Connect those two lines to create the brim of the leprechaun’s hat. Then draw two lines up from either side of the brim and connect them with another line to make the top of the hat. Add a few more lines inside the hat to create the ribbon or belt that wraps around the hat.
- Next, draw the leprechaun’s head and beard. Draw a half circle down from one side of the hat and up to the other side. On each side draw two curved lines for some pointy leprechaun ears, and add another small line inside to add some thickness to them. Under one ear draw a line that follows around the bottom of the head, while curving it in and out along the way like a cloud. This will be the leprechaun’s bushy beard.
- Add a nose and some eyes to the St. Patrick’s Day leprechaun. Let’s keep these simple. Draw an open circle in the middle of the face for an up-turned leprechaun nose, with two dots inside for the nostrils. Then just above the nose on either side, draw two bigger dots for simple eyes, and curved lines above each for eyebrows.
- Draw a smile. Maybe our leprechaun just found a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow, so let’s make him happy today. Draw a curved line under the nose and then two more small curves on either side for cheeks.
- Now let’s draw the leprechaun’s body. Under the beard on one side draw a straight line down. Then draw another line across and up to the other side for a rectangular body. Draw a few more lines for a leprechaun’s belt, like to the one you did for the hat.
- Let’s draw some simple legs and boots. Under the body, draw a curved line on each side for some simple legs. Then draw some triangles at the bottom of each for the leprechaun’s boots.
- Draw the leprechaun’s arms and hands, holding four-leafed clovers. Draw a curved line out from one side of the body, and finish it with a little circle for a hand. Then draw a line that sticks out of the bottom and the top of the circle for the four-leafed clover’s stem. Next, draw four triangular shapes surrounding the top of the stem for the clover’s lucky leaves. Finally, draw one more small circle above the hand for a thumb.
- Repeat the arm, hand and clover on the other side.
